So, who are the teachers at Modern English? Here’s a quick guide to who’s who.
Management and administration
Steve Holloway is the co-founder of Modern English. Of UK origin, he has almost 30 years of International Teaching Experience, with 25 years in Malaysia. After graduating from Cardiff University, Steve taught in Cambridge, before travelling to Japan, where he spent two years teaching before finally coming to Malaysia. After four years in the International Islamic University, Steve became Coordinator of the Business Training Unit of the British Council. As well as being the principal of Modern English, he is also an internationally-recognised Technical Writing Consultant for the Oil & Gas industry, conducting regular programmes throughout Asia and the US.
Angie Yeo Siew Tiang
Angie is the co-founder and Centre Manager of Modern English. Born and bred in Melaka, Angie ran her own business for ten years before deciding to specialise in English language teaching. She obtained her Certificate in TESOL from the London Teacher Training College and was centre manager of UK English Language Centre in Petaling Jaya for two years. She started Modern English in Puchong in 2011 and has been central to it becoming the fastest growing English centre in Malaysia.
Eddie brings over 30 years of corporate experience to Modern English. This experience ranges from general management through to training. He is overseeing the expansion of Modern English into the overseas market.
Janis Cheah Siew Fong
Administrative Manager, Co-owner
Janis oversees the day-to-day running of the centre and is usually the first person in Modern English you see or hear. With over 20 years’ experience in customer service, Janis ensures we never forget to whom we owe our continued progress.
Pn Azizah is our go-to person for all our regulatory needs. With almost 30 years in one of the world’s largest multinational companies, she brings a wealth of admin experience to Modern English.
Mike was born in Newport, in the UK. On completing his degree in Computing at the University of Newport, South Wales, he attained his CELTA at the British Council in Kuala Lumpur. Since joining Modern English in 2012, he has taught to all ages and levels. He has also spent one year as a volunteer teacher at an Orang Asli home in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to the teaching, he has worked on the production and editing of Oil and Gas technical standards.
Chris has a come to teaching via a route which has included several years at sea as an officer cadet, followed by a degree in Sports Coaching. It was during this course that he realised sharing knowledge with students of all ages was his true calling. Since joining Modern English in 2016, he has taught all ages and abilities but he has a special affinity for students struggling with their English.
Lisa is from London, where she has been in education, as a teacher and a counsellor, for more than 10 years. Her experience as an IELTS specialist in the UK, Nepal and India is why she is now a key part of our IELTS team for international and Malaysian students.
Gary Permenter, Teacher
Gary was born and educated in St. Louis in the USA, where he completed a PhD in Psychology. He has been involved in teaching and education in general for more than 15 years. As an IELTS examiner in India and Malaysia, he brings unrivalled knowledge to our exam preparation team.
Liyana has been teaching English for more than 6 years and obtained her CELTA at the British Council in Kuala Lumpur in 2016. Since then, she has been at Modern English where she has helped revamp our entire very young learners’ curriculum.
Martin is a professional writer with credits in the UK (including the BBC) and the ASEAN region. His real-life experience as a professional is shared with our most avid would-be writers in our creative writing classes.
